In the days of wooden sailing vessels before electricity, these
prisms were mounted flush into the ship's deck with the conical
part pointing down into a cabin below. It would dispurse the light
from above down into the lower cabin. They provided below deck lighting
during daylight hours to replace the kerosine lamps and candles which
proved a bit dangerous with wooden vessels.
