June 1975 Philmont

Philmont Rangers 1975

Philmont Scout Ranch, New Mexico

My second and last summer as a Ranger, or Backpacking Guide, at Philmont. Philmont is a High Adventure Base near Cimarron, New Mexico and 20,000 scouts hiked it's backcountry each summer. It was a moment in my life that sparked a deep passion to hike and explore the wilderness that continues more than 35 years later. Can you find me in the crowd?? After this summer, I went west to the Pacific Crest Trail in 1976; and 35 years later, I am still hiking new miles on the PCT.

My late brother Bill McKown is on the top row & 9th Ranger from the left. This picture is most likely the last picture taken of him while he was still able to walk (hike). He went on a side trip to California when he left Philmont before he had to return to Kansas University and broke his neck in a car accident. He spent the rest of his life (49 years) in a power wheelchair and died right before he turned 60. Bill loved Philmont and served on their Board of Directors and their Ranch Committee until he died. He made a very sizable donation to Philmont to build the new staff quarters up at Baldy Town which Philmont named for him. He got Chope Phillips approval to scatter his ashes there, which they never allow.
