The fifth courtyard, also the innermost site of the Quoc Tu Giam (Imperial Academy) - school to educate talented generations to “treasure of the country” under the Lê dynasty. When the Nguyễn Dynasty of the 19th century took power, they moved the school to Hue. This place was dedicated to Confucius' parents, called Khai Thanh shrine. However, the whole Thai Hoc house and Khai Thanh shrine were destroyed by French bombing in 1947, remaining only two stone pillars, basement and four stone towers. Recently, this area was reconstructed with traditional style. Behind the Upper temple is a gate leading to Thai Hoc house. Its structure is similar to the Dai Thanh Gate but narrower scale. It is here that called the Quoc Tu Giam (the Imperial Academy). The combination of the drum house, the bell house under the foliage of old trees recall visitors of the ancient academic ambience, which contributes to the architectural balance of the complex, also reflects the cultural identity, humanitarian and philosophical spirit of Vietnam
