The house above Meiringen sometime after the 1857 renovation. At that time, a story, a full-width room structure and the top floor were added. Most notably, the shielded roof was put in place. Before Napoleon's invasion of Switzerland and the concurrent restructuring of government and society, such roofs were reserved for the nobility in Canton Bern. The installation of this feature here was an expression by this family, which had been here since 1602, that they really were nobility too. At least they thought so. From the condition of the façade, I would guess that this image is late 19th or early 20th century.
