John Gilbert

It's been said by the late surrealist, Max Ernst, that collage is "the juxtaposition of mutually distant realities on an unsuitable plane." Free association of unrelated man made and natural realities is often believably perceived when these forms are placed in seemingly appropriate relation to each other.
This is the premise on which I approach what I do.

LITTLE THINGS is a collection of abstract and semi-abstract post card collages and small assemblages with heavy emphasis on texture and balanced composition. My works involve realities that I find interesting. Small "throw away" materials or discards and overlooked "unimportant things" are mostly used.

LITTLE THINGS are totally improvisational and intentionally eclectic -- sometimes playful and childlike, often zany and fun. Obviously all works are limited edition (one of one). View each piece from a comfortable distance and don't take them or yourself too seriously.

John

"If one knows exactly what one is going to do, what good is it to do it? Because one knows it, it is of no interest. It is better to do something else." (Pg 133, Picasso -- Creator and Destroyer, Huffington)
