Beyond the foreground sandstone is a sheer cliff about 300 feet high;
that cliff looks like this when seen from the shadowy ridge in the distance.
At the base of the far slope is Winter Camp Wash, the stream that flows (left to right)
through the amphitheater; it is probably the agent that created this huge open space.
The next photo is a close-up of the left end of the ridge.
