What's going on here?

Pritchett Canyon (Moab, Utah) view map

Isolated instances of weirdness usually do not upset rational persons, but repeated instances can be troubling. The scene above falls into the latter category: another photo documents this person at the same rock on another occasion.

One is tempted to ask “What is this guy doing?” A better question would be “What is this rock doing?” All the rock visible here is Moabian sandstone. Sandstone is just another type of rock, but Moabian sandstone is psychoramic, meaning it possesses a quality that affects the mind of weak-brained individuals who spend a lot of time around it. To explain it here would be redundant, as the gallery-level text goes into great detail.
