I just love myrtle – I could never get it to grow in Sandhurst but it romps away here, we’ve got two fine specimens, one around six feet tall and the other a bit smaller but no less perfectly formed. It’s flowering now and the scent is heavenly. In fact, while doing my homework on it, I discovered it’s apparently great for burning and extremely aromatic on the fire.
I suppose that’s another benefit but for me the sheer pleasure of brushing past it on my way to let out the hens in the morning is good enough for me.
Apparently, myrtle has an association with Aphrodite – and as I was born in Aphrodite’s birthplace, I think I can lay a claim to it as ‘mine’.
Talking of being born in Cyprus – I am as sick as a parrot to discover that the Spurs have drawn a team from Famagusta in the UEFA cup – I ALWAYS support Cypriot teams but on this occasion of course I can’t – and it’s especially gutting when it’s my ‘home town’ – born right there as I was!
Ah well, all is fair in love and war as they say – Famagusta will just have to do without me for once……
Last year, my subject was people I love - I am like a moth to their flame!
