2nd September 2007 - hard hats

I do love the (relatively) new feature on pbase that tells you which of your pics are generating interest over the last couple of days. I don’t know about other people but mine tend to be fairly predictable – my current and last PAD shots, a couple of ‘all-time faves’ that are my biggest hitters ever then the rest is made up of whatever people have meandered into for some reason.

Sometimes, the shots are because of the anniversary of an incident or because for whatever reason the subject of the pic has hit the news or any one of a number of other reasons. In there today are shots of Colin, my tribute to Geoff Hamilton, a row of damsons on a tree and a few other ‘random’ things.

Also today, I have checked my stats to find myself thinking ‘oh-oh, this could mean trouble’ – a couple of pics from ages ago that have been hit a lot over the last couple of days. They are not in any sense newsworthy or noteworthy. Both are poor shots, both are semi-related to the same subject and they don’t contain a link by me between the two. Both have had a couple of thousand hits over time so they’re not shots which are completely un-noticed but there is a definite spike in hits that makes me think something is afoot.

It’s the statistician in me you see – there are patterns in the numbers and when the pattern is broken then it is noticeable. Of course it could just be a complete coincidence - they do happen, but statistically the confidence interval of around 95% likelihood that the two are related is enough for me to say 'OK - batten down the hatches, there are going to be some bad things going on'.

So, I am expecting the need for one of these to pop into my world over the next few days. Ah well – maybe it’ll all work out for the best!
