5th August 2007 - grass

Is the grass always greener on the other side?

Who knows – I expect not.

It’s probably just the same as the grass on this side really – it grows too fast, seeds itself too freely, needs cutting too often and generally is a pleasure and a pain all at once.

I’ve been cutting ours today – a mighty job that just has to be done and putting it off just makes for a more difficult task later.

Three of five lawns cut, eight trips to the grass heap with full basket of cuttings, two hours and a lot of sweat later and still the front and side to do……hurgh – the job is quite literally never ending.

This grass seed head was threading its way up through the mesh of the veggie garden’s fence – unchecked because it’s in a spot where the mower can’t touch it and I don’t have either the time or the inclination to get in there and pull it out by hand.

When I said this morning ‘what do you want to do today?’ I expected a trip out somewhere but my Daddy (birthday boys always get to choose) said he’d rather sit and watch the Grand Prix (they’re all rooting for Lewis H in my world).

That suited me – I got to spend the day in the garden and the lawns were the last of the jobs that were ‘ticked off’ by me – the rest were – pruning trees, shredding small twigs and cutting the big stuff up for firewood, spreading muck in the bean and pea bed that my Mum kindly cleared for me on Friday, weed control matting it so it’s ready for next year, planting up the last of the squashes because the ones planted in June have finally turned up their toes and died in this dire summer we’re having and sorting out bird feeders.

All-in-all, it’s been a physically hard day but I know for sure that my grass is as green as any other grass around and I’ve just got to learn how to enjoy it.

I am clearly a creature of habit and last year's shot was of a cockerel at Trago - just like the day before yesterday's shot..... I didn't even have enough wit about me to make up a new title! (Though I didn't know on Friday that I was being slothful and negligent.)
