I’ve really slaved in the garden this weekend but I do feel as though I’ve got something to show for it.
My veggie patch is now fully planted – cauliflowers and broccoli share the first bed with the kiwi vine, the second has two types of potato (salad and main crop) the third has corn on the cob, celeriac, chard and spinach, then the next has courgettes and two types of squash, then the next has garlic, three types of onion, leeks, rocket, beetroot and carrots, then the last has two sowings of broad beans, mange tout, sugar snap peas and French beans.
I can’t wait to start the harvest in earnest – all we’ve had out so far is rocket and radishes. I reckon by the end of next week we’ll start to get some sugar snaps or some mange tout – both are flowering like crazy at the moment.
The herbaceous planting is all done, all the lawns are mown and the bedding is all in tubs.
I am covered in cow shit, grass clippings, compost and mud and type this as I wait for the bath to fill……. Still - not bad from this beginning, through this to now!
Now all I have to do is to keep everything that needs watering watered, keep the grass down and build my herb garden (that’s a job for next weekend), then I can fit in more hacking back of overgrown shrubs and shredding the waste that can’t be used on the fire for my paths in my veggie patch – at the moment, some are grass clippings only and I want to top them off with a thick layer of shredder output.
Hneugh – that’s enough for this weekend! Now I vegetate!
Kit Young was inspiring me last year.
