11th March 2007 - dreams are nothing more than wishes....

…….and a wish is just a dream you wish to come true……

Kim put this idea into my head (Thanks Kim)…..she suggested getting a Dr Hook Greatest Hits album and getting DM to give me a massage while it was playing, but although I do have to confess to liking Dr Hook, they wouldn’t be my first choice for a couple of reasons….

1. David tells a story of trying to go and see Dr Hook with an ex-girlfriend and them not being allowed into the venue because they were wearing trainers (Update - he tells me it wasn't trainers that got him kicked out, it was a leather jacket and jeans!) – it was long after the band stopped having hits and they were on the ‘scampi in a basket’ cabaret circuit I believe.
2. I’m not in the least bit afraid to say that David Cassidy was always the one for me……when you crank up the record player and ‘How can I be sure’ comes out in those breathy tones I go weak.

You see, I was going to marry David (C that is) – he was going to bump into me in the high street (quite what he’d be doing in Leatherhead High Street is beyond me when I’m being rational), fall madly, deeply, passionately in love with me and we’d be in love forever.

My David Cassidy Annual gave me all of the tips on how to attract him (not too much make-up, be ‘out-doorsy’), what to cook for him if he came to tea (banana ham rolls) and what to wear to impress him (jeans – ‘everyone feels happy in jeans’). I was, according to the horoscopes printed in the book, an ideal partner for him because Leos (me) have a great capacity for love. I was ready and waiting for the moment………which (sadly) never came.

I saw him in concert twice – at the Empire Pool, Wembley and then later at White City Stadium – I was there on THAT night, the night when a girl got crushed to death and it was the beginning of the end of his career as a heart-throb. I went with a girl from my class at school (Judy Richardson – I wonder what happened to her?). I can clearly remember her turning to me at one point and sighing ‘he’s so dreamy’. She was, of course, absolutely right!

Much later, Jules, Suze and I saw him in Blood Brothers…..and I loathe musicals. I just wanted to shout out ‘sod that, just sing ‘could it be forever’ and forget all that Blood brothers old crap’ – but of course I restrained myself. We waited behind afterwards and got his autograph. Cool!

Much later still Shazbop and I went to see it again (glutton for punishment) – but he was ill and didn’t perform so we got our money back and went for a meal instead!

Even later still, Shazbop phoned me and said ‘do you fancy going to see David Cassidy at Hammy Odeon?’ To which I responded, in time honoured fashion ‘is a shark’s arse water-tight?’ (I swear that expression is one of hers but she swears it’s one of mine!!!)

So, Shazzer and I went to see him – and we had after-show party passes because she worked for his record company. We didn’t waste the opportunity and when he came into the room, he walked through the crowd, putting his hands round Shazbop’s waist as he passed her. We both nearly fainted from the thrill – my own thrill was knowing he’s touched my buddy and of course her thrill was the touching itself.

He’s been in the news a lot this week because of the launch of his book – my folks sent me the Daily Mail’s serialisation of it in the post and I’ve heard him talking about it on Radio 4.

Do I still want to marry him? Nah – I’m very happy with DM BUT, I still like a snooze on the sofa after a hard day’s work (shovelling a whole ton of shit, note that there is still some of it under my fingernail) dreaming of that lithe young thing that sent my hormones into a frenzy all those years ago.

Hearing was my subject last year.....which is a bit rich given that I am almost totally deaf!
