8th March 2007 - growth

Just another day?

Sometimes you can sow seed in the most unpromising of places and find it thrives. In a sense, that’s what’s happened here (actually in both senses of here). Even though we’ve prepared the vegetable garden by rotovating it, it’s still very stony but I shoved the garlic in anyway – I decided I’d just make sure that the crops that really don’t like stones find their way into the beds that have been de-stoned and the rest would manage for this year. It’s going to have to be a gradual de-stoning as the beds are bad.

Having looked at the reference books written by my gardening gurus (top of the list to this day is Geoff Hamilton – I still mourn his loss even now – I check out his views first, then look at the others to see whether there is consensus then make up my mind….to be honest, I’m not sure why I check out the others too because I’ll always go with Geoff’s view), garlic was deemed one of those crops that would be OK fending for itself in quite rough soil.

Anyway, sixteen cloves were shoved in and sixteen cloves are now shooting skywards so fast that you’d be forgiven for thinking you could see them grow. I do like their red collars! This is the first time I have ever grown garlic – never had good enough soil before so I am pretty thrilled to see it rocketing away.

As for the other sowing in an unpromising place, I have, as always on anniversaries, been mulling over the PAD thing and have decided that the unpromising start 1462 days ago was the start of something rather nice that’s helped me to thrive. I’m still dead chuffed when people I don’t know egg me on – thanks Christa for your comment yesterday, it made my day (as of course did all of the comments from within the pbase community) and I am thrilled that Teresa is still with me every day several years in and without us ever meeting. What most PADers don’t know is that there was no community here when we started. No meta-gallery, no special forum……nothing but a few souls trying to take and post a photo a day (four including me). I suspect that many join now as much to be part of the community as to undertake the PAD challenge, which brings a totally new dimension to the process.

Today I shot my PAD in my lunch break – I have had a really productive day, including having our supper all ready except for popping it in the oven as I sit here. You’d be surprised (or maybe not) at the number of days when I get up from my PC at 9pm or even later and think ‘OK – now what shall I cook tonight?’ It usually turns out OK in the end.

Tomorrow DM and I have a BIG DAY – one which, if it goes well, will help to shape our future and if it goes badly will plunge us into gloom. We both have our fingers crossed. It is a day when we will be talking about growth of a different kind!

last year, I celebrated the end of year 3 and the start of year 4 with really cack pics - I like to think that the end of year 4 and the start of year 5 are somewhat better! (Especially the end of year 4 - personally I reckon that's one of my best!)

It makes good sense that you are going to continue. Who were the other two beside you and David?

I LOVE this shot! Just something about the gravel and orange soil arount this bulb. I love your entries and never could have dreamed of having such a great friend from just browsing pictures. I hope you and David get just what you are wanting.
