26th January 2007 - hobbit with a wicked sense of humour

That's what the Daily Telegraph said about Bill Bailey, pictured above.

I’ve been on the corporate whore circuit today, with a trip up to the smoke for a big awards ceremony.

The day didn’t start well – a fight with DM to start the day, followed by getting unceremoniously dumped off a train (because my ticket wasn’t valid for that particular train, even though I’d been told it was) then dealing with the fall-out from a cat stuck down a hot air vent……I was beginning to think my day had been jinxed.

Because of the cat in the duct, I needed a stand-in for one of my colleagues (and quite rightly so, I’d never have expected anything other than that outcome given the circs), so James, one of our BYTs (bright young things for anyone not in the know on that one), valiantly went home from the office, pulled on his suit and went to the Grosvenor House Hotel so instead of a day at the office, he got a posh lunch in a swanky hotel, free booze and entertained by a troll.

What I particularly like about this story is that James is a bit like me – a ‘kid from nowhere’ and he told me, while I was on the phone to him dishing out instructions of what he needed to do, that he knew the Grosvenor because he’d once been a bell boy there, before his illustrious rise to fame for the company! Now that surely is a case of ‘Cinders, you WILL go to the ball’ if ever I heard one.

Anyway, you never know when you get to this do, what will happen and this year was no exception. We were entertained by the remarkable Bill Bailey himself, who we watch almost every evening in this house on ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’, part of his act was a rendition of ‘Three times a Lady’….in German! He also treated us to a Kraftwork-esque version of Hokey Kokey! However, before that he regaled us with the (little-known) fact that he’s a West Country boy….so has gone up in my estimation and a description of how he was once a musician writing music for kids TV shows – dunno if it was true, but I liked it anyway!

Shortly after this shot was taken, I was on stage with the man, dishing out a gong because my company sponsors the event.

So, I got to meet the Hobbit……..cool bananas!

Crushed, I was, last year!

It must have been a big thrill for a Hobbit to be in such illustrious company.

We loved his Bilbo character on "Spaced." Spaced is one of our favorites series. He was good in Black Books.

He (Bill Bailey)sounds as funny as diarrhoea, I think you had to be there!
I'd love to hear the rest of the story.
