13th January 2007 - time and tide....

….waits for no man…..

I am a ‘do-er’, not a watcher. I can’t abide sitting around ‘relaxing’ – I find myself realising that I am tense and my shoulders are clenched.

Today has been another of those days when the weather has been pretty grim, despite promises to the contrary from the Met Office. So, after a short trip out to buy more rat bait boxes (yep, as surely as night turns to day, rats find their way back into our garden) and a bolt, we were driving home across the moor and I was fretting – could I face another day of processing photos to go on sale? No, I could certainly not. Could I think of a single thing I could do to stop me from going up the wall indoors? No, I could not.

So, I popped back into town, bought a water hand pump spray gun thingy, got my grotties on and set to work in the greenhouse, after dislodging an indignant chicken who thought the door had been left open so she could lounge around in a dry dirt bath.

I used the sprayer to spray Jeyes Fluid across all of the surfaces and into every nook and cranny I could find, then got DM to set up the pressure washer so I could de-grot the whole place, inside and out. It’s taken me all afternoon and I ache from the effort of keeping the pressure washer under control but now that greenhouse is gleaming and sparkling like a jewel.

You have to understand that this greenhouse can be seen from space, it’s so huge – I’m not talking your average 6’x8’ jobbie here, I’m talking 21’ long so this is a mammoth task. Add to that the fact that it had lain unused and full of junk for who-knows-how-long before we moved here and all we did to prep it for use last summer was to get rid of the old tat that it was full of and literally plant with no other prepping at all. No wonder our tomatoes got blight – it’s surprising they got anywhere at all in that mangy place.

I came out of it covered in water, Jeyes fluid, mud, moss and cobwebs but feeling as though I had achieved something. At the moment I feel invisible in all other parts of my life, other than here at home and in my garden so an achievement here MUST be good.

So, now it’s nice and clean….not yet tidy but that will hopefully follow, tomorrow. Next on the ‘greenhouse plan’ is a couple more heated seed trays so the chilli seeds we bought from South Devon Chilli Company last week will have nice cosy beds to ensure they say to themselves ‘oh, I’m warm, wet and feeling like a stretch – perhaps I’ll pop out for a bit of light’…..in three weeks time, we start the new season’s planting. Just don’t ask me about that veggie bed.

Time doesn’t wait for me or anyone else…..sometimes I wish we could make it stand still like this lovely clock is doing at the moment while DM makes an adjustment to its timekeeping. Maybe then I’d have the veggie beds ready too.

Last year, I was trying to rid myself of the creepy feeling I get when I find myself somewhere 'posh'.

The clock is a beautiful piece of machinery. Very nice shot, too.

Nice shot. I don't know how you guys keep this PaD thing going so long....

(but don't knock the Met Office ;-))
