17th December 2004 - 17th day of advent - two little boys

My two little nephews are going on a big adventure this Christmas. They’re going to Lapland to meet Father Christmas in the flesh!

How can we compete with such an exciting adventure? Well, we can’t!

BUT what we can do is give them personalised drawings by DM, in their favourite colours on tee-shirts! So, they get these lovely shirts (that by the way are too big but they are the smallest size the company where we get them from does).

This year, for the first time really, I am getting to know these two. They are just like you’d expect Jan’s sons to be – bright, opinionated, gifted and charming. They are also interested in everything and think DM is God – well, he does drive a motorbike (and lets them sit on it in the garage) and plays the guitar (and lets them strum it on a stool in the house). Me? I’m the weird one who doesn’t know how to hold a conversation with a four-year-old (nor for that matter with a five-year-old) but I’m trying really hard.

They are my only contact with small children – DMs nephews seem grown-up by comparison.

I know I’m not the best auntie in the world (too scared and too intimidated) but I’m determined not to be some old witch that they’re scared of……..though I’m not at all sure how to achieve that. Still, I suppose I can only do my best and muddle through. Maybe one day, they’ll see me as an OK person – that’s all I can expect and all I can hope for.

Isn’t being a ‘grown-up’ difficult?

the secret is letting them come to you getting on their level. I always want my grandchildren to be excited to see me. & they always run to "Papaw" He's calm, laid back & makes them feel like they are the only other person on the face of the earth while in his lap.

I bet you're a lovely auntie.

These two little boys talk often of Auntie Linda, Uncle (that's what they have decided to call him!) David (the one with the motor bike, as opposed to 'Fuzzy Face', their other Uncle David!), and Archie and Rosie, so you really have nothing to worry about! They don't pretend to like people they don'y feel happy with... that's the thing about 4 & 5 year olds, they don't know anything about diplomacy!!! So, unless Eddy has told you that he doesn't like you because... then he really does - quite simple!!!

They will just love their presents, and thank you to you and David for making them feel very special - not many children will be wearing specially designed T shirts next summer!!! Love Jan XX

Relax Linda.
Little ones are easy. They'll return the slightest love a thousand times over.

These two little boys already love you. Just this morning at breakfast, Edward asked me 'when are we going to see Auntie Linda and David again?' I told him that he can see you after their big adventure in Lapland.

Great photo of really attractive shirts. I can only imagine what a wonderful trip that will be for the children!
Don't worry about the kids. Feed them fun food, laugh with them and have an adventure or two, like going to visit the sheep. When they get older they'll appreciate your wit and imagination.

David is certainly quite the artist. Don't worry, small boys are always wary of their aunts... you might want to kiss them!

I don't have a history of too many 'small people' around me either, so I know what you mean. Its all part of their growing up.

What cool shirts!

Linda, you seem to be able to connect with many different kinds of people as evidenced by your wonderful PAD. I'm sure your nephews will grow to love you and respect you the more they get to know you. Just remember that they are just small people not yet grown... they will respond to the same things that grown people will... love, kindness and respect.
