22nd April 2004 - more of the same...

Today has been another mad dash of three days work to fit into less than a day because at 4pm we had to set off to Slough to moderate a couple of group discussions in the evening. (Hence posting this a day late.) The day was much the same as Wednesday, early start then not home until nearly midnight.

I’d been given a hard time about posting crappy photos so today I decided that instead of a snapshot while dashing from one place to another, I would take five minutes before leaving for Slough to sit my colleague, Ewan, down and take another portrait. I was so pleased with my portraits of Beth and Sab at the weekend that I was feeling confident that I could just get a good shot without too much effort.

In the event, it was more difficult than I’d imagined. I got my lighting set up wrong and, because of time pressure to get away for the groups, I didn’t have time to adjust and re-shoot. I ended up with too many highlights and deep shadows.

Ewan is a very handsome chap but he isn’t as happy in front of a camera as Beth and Sab were (interestingly I’ve learned that makes a huge difference to how well a portrait turns out). He was trying to smile and he looked as though he was grimacing when I looked at the pictures. This one has the nicest facial expression.

The whole potd was set up and executed in less than five minutes. I’ve also learned that allowing a bit more time would have been useful! In fact, I learned that over-confidence after one good experience isn’t a good thing – I need to think more about why what works, works and what doesn’t, doesn’t.

Anyway, here he is. An hour later he was sitting in front of a room full of women who were talking about their husbands’ illness (same embarrassing subject as yesterday) and they were telling him he’s got all this to come. Poor Ewan – I think he got a bit squeamish at one point.

He’s a natural with groups of women, the ultimate charmer and I think they all wished they could take him home with them!!!

Ewan stayed here overnight afterwards because we had an early start again this morning and the meeting was local to here and he had the dubious pleasure of sleeping with Rosie! (His choice...I did warn him of the danger!!!)

Linda, I think we've clearly established that you can do portraits very well. Even in five minutes.

I think Linda's done incredibly well given how awkward the subject was being! Thanks - it's definitely one of the best photos of me. If I remember rightly, I'm trying not to giggle, because David was prancing around on one foot in the background having just lost a kick-boxing contest with his beloved Beetle......

Also, many thanks to Linda and David for their wonderful hospitality that evening (Rosie and Archie too!) Very enjoyable!

Ps Hi Beth - loved the photos of you and Sab. You're going to have to teach me how to act so naturally in front of the camera.

Well, this sort of contrast can be perfectly acceptable. I think it looks fine and his subtle smile is appealing, well, to a number of woman here! If this is not what YOU wanted, then you do have more work ahead of you. Yes, it is much easier to work with a "model"--professional or not. Just think how hard it is for full-time portrait photogs who HAVE to make everybody comfortable enough to look their best. It always shows if you can't make them comfortable. He doesn't look tense here, though.

Great portrait... the subject's not too bad looking, LOL!!!

Adding another LOL at Lara! Oh man...the more I look at the picture, the younger I'm getting. By the end of this note, I'll be sending his picture in to a "teen idol" magazine and screaming if I see him in person.

Yeah...yeah...the man is simply gorgeous! Lordy. Nicely done, Linda.

Wow--he looks like a movie star.

See I am so taken by him that I sent my message twice. :)

I am in utter love. What a dashing man. It is really hot in here all of a sudden.

So who's been moaning at you for taking crappy shots recently? I think they've all been good, and a true reflection of your day... after all it IS supposed to be a diary! I'll bet I know who it is...

Portraits can be really hard. The first thing that I find is that the person HAS to be a willing participant. I have more CRAP shots of Tony b/c he doesn't want to sit for me, but I bring home my friend Hernan, who is completely happy to pose and I get the best results!

AS for Ewan....Umm...this ain't bad, Linda. Hard to take a bad picutre of a guy with THOSE eyes!! SO keep it up, try some more portraits! I like them!

Excellent lighting-well done Linda.

And such a beautiful smile..I can see how he could be charming.

Nice portrait, Linda. He has a great smile you've captured. Um.. can I come to work with you? We have no one that looks like this..... at all.... period ... end of (sad) story....
Guest 23-Apr-2004 14:33
i have a harder time w/ men's portraits than womens...alot of guys are uncomfortable in front of cameras...this is a good shot tho, the lighting really works. :)

This is good Linda - very contrasty which adds to (makes?) the immage. Good job!!

Linda - you'll meet yourself coming the other way one of these days ;))

I think the lighting & shadows work quite well here, emphasizing the character that he apparently is. This is as good as any I've seen. I think he would/should be pleaased, as should you! and David . . hush!

Great portrait Linda!

Portraits are so hard and I think you did well! I like the deeper contrast though.. It's definitely a very masculine portrait. He's a cutie for sure! Love those eyes.

Sometimes having more to work with can be a disadvantage it seems. But as I said on Sunday, Sab and I are born posers! I still think he looks handsome and you have totally captured the blue of his eyes. Glad you are making use of his moderating skills too! B x
