All week I've been in the depths of despair about our impending match against Man Utd. As you know, I'm usually an eternal optimist about the ability of Spurs to pull something out of the bag for each game. My heart has been sinking for a week since last Saturday's drubbing by Newcastle, a miserable failure in the cup mid-week, losing in a penalty shoot-out when we should have won properly in normal time. Man Utd needed to win today to go top of the table.
Man Utd is something of a bogey team for us - last season we lost to them, the season before we were 3-0 up at half time then managed to concede 5 goals in the second half to lose 3-5. It's made worse by all the pseudo Man Utd fans in the world - you know the type, nauseatingly smug about 'their team' when they NEVER set foot inside a football stadium. They encourage their children to support them because of their success. I actually believe children learn more by supporting an ordinary team because they learn that having money isn't the be-all and end-all of sport - sometimes losing is good for character building and to make people realise they can't have it all.
Anyway, this morning, I got up and drew back the curtains - two magpies on the lawn - two for joy! I had my tea in my lucky mug, I wore my lucky pants, in fact I wore an almost identical outfit to the one when we won 5-2 two weeks ago! I got into London much earlier than I needed to be there to meet Sarah and so walked along the South Bank to London Bridge rather than getting on a train. I saw this boat moored on the opposite shore - navy blue, white and yellow - Spurs colours! Another 'lucky' sign? Nope, not today, we were 2-0 down at half time and although we played a spirited game and tried hard, we recovered a bit with a Gus Poyet goal late on but we just couldn't get a goal to bring us back level. Still, at least we've not gone into the relegation zone - that's a relief!
So, we had one small benefit from losing - ARSEnal were kept off the top!
One thing is puzzling me though....as I walked along the bank, the river didn't look this blue....maybe it's a Danube effect? How lovely to think so, that it's turned out this colour on my photo despite looking grey and murky as usual because of love!
