…go marching in.
We’ve been watching the footie tonight and after we went 0-1 down, DM fetched out his new toy(!) and started to play “On when the Spurs go marching in” and sure enough, Ryan Mason struck an absolute screamer and the scores were level. We went on to a handsome win, which was important for all sorts of reasons.
Last time he played this tune in earnest, we were in the Bell and Hare on the last day of the last season when we were season ticket holders and he was playing the tune on one of his harmonicas. That night it was plain bloody magical. Tonight it was equally amazing given that he’d never picked up a mandolin before until about three hours earlier when the postie delivered his birthday present and he was able to start to learn to play.
I love to hear him play any instrument and an more than a bit envious of his ability to pick up more or less any instrument and play it. I’m also a bit sheepish that my folks bought him such a beautiful instrument and all I could manage was a set of boomwhackers. (If you don’t know what boomwhackers are, go to youtube and find a video of someone playing them – they are fab but a lot more low-fi than the mandolin.)
