You know when you have one of those moments when you remember what it was that has been escaping you for months. Today was it. A couple of months ago, some friends of ours came to stay for the weekend and one of them had toast for breakfast with some home-made jam that I’d made. She asked me what flavour the jam was and I couldn’t recall what I’d put in it.
To be honest, I made it two years ago and the only person who’s ever eaten it was Carlotta, my friend who wanted to know what was in it. I always think it’s a good idea to make jam when I’m not thinking about the fact that neither of us like it. I just have this preserving frenzy that makes me need to use things rather than wasting them.
Anyway, today I was reminded of what the jam was made from – grapes – our grapevines are laden with fruit and it’s ripening fast in the best summer we’ve had for yonks. Our last grape harvest resulted in four jars of jam that remain, to this day, gathering dust in the cupboard and so I must learn this lesson – you need to think of another use for grapes because in a short time, there will be a basket full and you’ll be tempted to make more jam that will, in turn, sit in the cupboard for an eternity.
Any suggestions? (Don’t say wine because I don’t think I could do a good enough job at the moment…)
