6th November 2013 - JD and the cone of shame

Poor JD. Although he’s a bit wibbly, he wants to play but no-one will play with him except for an annoying puppy who keeps bowling him over and shows no consideration for his injury. He is, as you can see, back from the vet and with luck and a following wind he’ll be OK. He had a puncture wound about 5-6” deep into his leg, so deep the vet thinks the only thing that stopped its progress was the bone it hit! The good thing about this is we now know for sure that he could not have done it in the house so it narrows down our search for the offending object. Clearly the bad thing is that we still have no idea where or how he got it only that it was “got” in the last 48 hours. That means that it could be anything in our garden or field.

After a panicky day today for DM, fitting in two shifts at work, two trips to the vet and another important and urgent appointment, he didn’t have chance to look for it today so it’s his top priority tomorrow. Let’s hope he finds it. The trouble is, it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack.

JD’s had a small meal, some mega antibiotics – they are so worried about infection that he’s got to take a 28 day course of antibiotics, not to mention a big hit of doggie painkillers and he’s just about coming round from his anaesthetic. Poor sausage is equipped with a “cone of shame”, our nickname for the horrid cones they get given when they’re not allowed access to a wound. It breaks our heart to make them wear them but we do see the need for us to keep his wound clean and un-bitten. We’ve been warned that there is to be “no excitement”, which means no walks or games so he’s going to have a thoroughly miserable time while little ‘un goes for walks and games. His forlorn look tells the story of how he feels his day has gone.

It's not a cone of shame, that Queen Anne collar is a badge of gallantry.
Poor JD that will slow him down a bit.
