2nd July 2009 - good luck charm

I don’t know how widespread around the globe putting a coin into a champagne cork from a bottle that you’ve drunk as a celebration is a symbol of good luck but it’s certainly the case here. I’ve looked it up on google and can only see UK references to this as a traditional thing so perhaps we are unique!

Anyway, somewhere hidden amongst my treasure trove of past memories, I have a cork with an old-style 5p bit in it from my 18th birthday party I think and now I have a new-style 5p bit in a cork. I got this cork on the day of my hen party and found it rolling around in the bottom of my handbag a couple of days ago.

The research I’ve done suggests it’s to help you to remember the happy times shared with the people you shared the bottle with and to ensure that you all continue to think of one another. Other sources say it’s to remember the good times and provide funds for the bad times. I’d say that a 5p bit isn’t really going to do much to stave off bad times in the literal sense, although it may be useful to bring a smile to your face when times are bad.

I’m hoping that it does bring me good luck because I’m starting to feel as though I’m going to need it in the coming few weeks. I’ve been getting quite stressed over the last few days despite my protestations to the contrary.

Calmness is something I need to foster and encourage in my world.
