It’s the first of July and it should be the middle of the strawberry season so imagine my surprise when I walked into my local shop to order 4lbs of Cornish strawberries (2kg for all you metric types) to be told that they’ve all been “grubbed up” to make way for raspberries!
So, I had a paddy (strop/whatever) then a bit of hyperventilation then decided I needed to go on a strawberry hunt to find my special Cornish strawberries for my home-made jam for our wedding breakfast.
I got in the car determined to find my prey, searched my local town (two greengrocers) then found the four pounds I needed nestling in a box with a lovely St Piran’s flag logo as I’d hoped. Phew.
The four pounds I’d secured, mixed with a pile of wild strawberries from my garden and the local bridge where a whole load of wild strawberry plants thrive, became a batch of strawberry jam for our wedding breakfast.
This is one of said strawberries.
Shame the four pounds only yielded half of the jam I’d been planning…..anyone for a strawberry hunt tomorrow?
