We’re in the final rundown to our own wedding now that Mum and Dad’s anniversary has been celebrated. That means I’m super busy, busy as a bee in fact.
I’m trying my best to make the garden and the veggie patch in particular look good so that our guests don’t think my big talk about what we’re trying to do here is just that….big talk. Ideally I’d like to be using home-grown stuff for our wedding feast where possible so to achieve that I’ve got to whip my garden into some sort of order. It's really, really important to me that things look good.
Today I’ve planted out lots of stuff that’s been clogging up the greenhouse so that I will have space to do the last of my sowings – I know it’s really a bit late for some of them but what’s a day or two between friends.
The sweetcorn is in, the squashes, pumpkins and courgettes are in so now I’ve got very little space left….which in itself is a problem because I still have a greenhouse full of things needing planting. I’m going to have to put some into my flower borders and hope I can keep the rabbits off them. The good thing is that some of my crops are going to be out of the beds by mid-summer – I’ve got early potatoes and garlic that will be out, not to mention the broad beans. This means that if I prepare the beds well, I should be able to get follow-on crops growing.
I’ve got a pernicious weed dump as far away from my garden as I can get it and still be on our land so a couple of visits have been made to it today to dump buttercup plants that have been making themselves at home in the veggie bed. On my way back between there and the house, I noticed the bees buzzing and thought a photo of them would make a good metaphor for my own endeavours.
So, here they are coming and going, working their little socks off. Go Doris.
