Another day at work. Another evening on the moor……but this time without the pub or the Doom Bar!
We bought a book about the moor last week, which DM has been reading while I’ve been out at work over the last couple of days. He decided it was time to try to find some of the things mentioned in the book and asked me this morning if I thought Archie would mind him taking Rosie out without him. Partly because two dogs are difficult to manage alone and partly because Archie’s spirit is willing though his flesh is definitely weak when it come to exploration and a lot of time is spent waiting for him to gather up his strength to get back on his feet after a tumble which slows everything down quite a lot.
My response was one of horror for poor old Arch – he’d be devastated to be left at home. So I negotiated with DM that he’d wait for his exploration until I got home when I’d accompany him and look after the old fella while DM clambered over rocks and stuff.
This was one of our destinations – the site of a mine collapse from an earlier time – I think the 1950s, when a whole engine house fell down a big hole. It’s been fenced in since then, but the hole remains to this day.
When we arrived at it, this ewe and her lamb were looking at us as if to say “we were here first”. Isn’t if strange how such a beautiful baby can come from such a scraggy-looking mother.
I know I’ve said it before but don’t you think that for animals essentially reared for meat, these ones have a pretty good life until the day they find themselves at an abattoir? Being a staunch nearly-life-long vegetarian (30+ years) I don’t like to think of their ultimate fate but at the same time I feel that being here, on top of the world, they get a better go of their lives than most other sheep.
The pinky blue light in the last of the evening's sunshine and the view from Bodmin Moor to Dartmoor never ceases to be a complete delight.
