23rd March 2009 - granite

Things have gone quiet on the kitchen front here. It’s because we’ve got such manky old walls that when we bashed a hole in one of them to re-align some electrical bits, we found that we were trying to cut solid granite from the wall and we ended up making such a big hole that it has taken weeks of patience, then finally impatience to get the wall “made good”. By patience, I mean we waited and waited for filler to dry. It didn’t show any sign whatsoever of doing so after a fortnight so I finally gave up and did some online investigation to find a fast-drying, deep-fill product. I ordered some, that had been imported from France, scraped out the old, refilled with the French stuff and within 24 hours it had dried and was rock hard.

Then we did the electrical work, then we needed to fill again…..I managed to get a nearly-deep-enough layer of the French stuff before I ran out and ended up having to go back to finishing off with the UK stuff. Still, as it’s only half-an-inch deep now, I’m hoping it’ll set quickly.

While all of these problems with granite stuff that’s too hard and stuff that won’t get hard have been going on, I’ve had a call of another man about granite. My granite slab is ready. Hurrah.

I went and fetched it from the quarry last week and today, DM and I have spent doing the final fit on some of the work surfaces – some wood and my lovely bit of polished granite.

It’s been hard work, humping huge lumps of wood and stone around the place all day but BOY does it look fab now.

All I need now is a bit of patience while I seal the granite and the wood ready for use. The granite will be done by tomorrow and the wood by the end of the week. That’s because the Tung oil needs 24 hours between coats, whereas the granite sealer can be done more quickly. Progress.

I know granite isn't supposed to be the 'fashionable' kitchen surface any more but it still looks better than anything else.
