These salt-works are the largest in the Canary Islands and still remain active with the support of the EU.
The landscape and ecological value of the salt-works combined with the complexity and originality of its architecture and hydraulic systems, make this one of the most unique marine salt-works in the world. The area has been declared a protected natural area.
A natural sea-water lagoon was formed by the Timanfaya volcanic eruptions that created a lava barrier between the land and the sea.
The lagoon has a circumference of about 1 Km and an average depth of ~3m.
The salt-works were originally constructed in 1895 by Vicente Lleó Benlliure and they were handed over to his nephew in 1945.
