Bottlenose Dolphins

Allihies, Co, Cork

Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) ... seen near Allihies, Co. Cork on 25-June-06. They are the smallest of the dolphins and eat fish, squid, krill and other crustaceans. They have a short upturned beak, a grayish blue color on the upper-side and are white underneath. Their main threats are shark, killer whales, and humans. The male grows to 4.1 m (161 in) and the female to 3.2 m (128 in). They are highly intelligent, are used in dolphin shows and live up to 50 years.
