The area to the south east of Siena, with its unique landscape, is known as the Crete Senesi. As the name implies, this terrain is particularly rich in clay and the distinctive grey coluration of the soil gives the landscape an appearance often described as lunar. The landscape is made uo of soft, rolling hills and winding roads, with here and there white dome-shapen formation called "biancane". Those who first visit this region will be struck by its unreal quality and by straordinary changes that come over landscape at different times if day and season, ranging from bright orange at sunset to grey
