One of the great painters of hummingbirds was Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904) Heade painted this group of "Gems of Brazil" with great care and successfully captured the rich iridescence of hummingbird feathers. The backgrounds of Heade's paintings also depict the mountain scenery of Brazil where the artist visited in 1863. Heade beautifully integrated birds and butterflies into their natural habitats. These paintings are housed in the new Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
