Individual flowers
The individual flowers of Skunk Cabbage are very small and in this image are just starting to bloom.
They are the little flowers arranged in circles on the central spike called the spadix.
The biochemical reactions in the cells of these little flowers produce heat which aids the plant to melt through ice and snow as it grows in the spring. This process is called thermogenesis.
