Captain Arthur Conolly
Conolly, long a Great Game player, was sent to Bukhara in September 1840 on a one man rescue mission to try and have Stoddart released only to find himself in the Bug Pit with Stoddart.
Finally in June 1842, the two men limped into a packed Registan, dug their own graves and silently knelt before them, their arms tied behind their backs. They were then beheaded and their bodies buried where they fell, forgotten and abandoned
