Long miscalled Russula veternosa, this attractive but very acrid species is known by its reddish to pinkish color with a a splash of yellow centrally on the cap. The viscid caps can reach large size, up to 6 inches, and are convex but becoming wavy or lobed and uplifted in age. Gills are close, attached, yellowish and drop a yellow spore print. The stalks are white, fading in age. The odor is floral but the taste in immediately acrid. It is usually found under conifers, Sitka spruce in this case. Depicted in the photo is a pinkish variety, though darker red tones are more common.
