Amanita pacificogemmata

Gig Harbor, Washington

Dainty for an Amanita, the caps of this species reach only about 2 inches across. They are a subdued yellow orange or butterscotch in color with adherent white veil material that washes away very easily. The gills are free, fairly close to crowded, and white. The stalk sports an annulus that is fragile. It is bare above the ring and covered with floccose material below. The volva is a tight collar. The species is very poisonous and not to be sampled. It fruits spring and fall under conifers and can be very common in springtime. There are a couple of exceedingly rare lookalikes that can only be told apart with microscopy. The spore print is white.
