False Funeral Bell
This wood-decaying little brown mushroom is found growing on gregariously in troops on rotting conifer wood in the spring of the year. The caps range from 1-3cm, and start tan or orangish tan, but they are strongly hygrophanous and fade from the disc outward to cream or whitish in color, with a two-tone appearance as seen in this photo as they dry out. They are convex, or plano-convex with an inrolled margin at first that later may become decurved. When young or moist the cap margins are weakly striatge. The gills are crowded and dingy brown, dropping a brown spore print. The stalks are thin, equal, dark vinaceous brown in age, and lacking velar material or an annulus. There is no odor and the taste is mild. Edibility is unknown but the resemblance to the deadly Galerina marginata makes experimentation ill-advised.
