Maine Pbase Meet-Up July 13, 2008

Jonathan, Janet, and I met up in Portland for a shootout on Sunday July 13. We started at City Hall, went thru Old Port, down to the working waterfront and to some pier runis, to the Portland Observaory, Portland Head Lighthouse, and Scarborough Marsh.

Many of these images are/were unedited, untitled, etc. I'll work on it. Over time, titles will replace photo numbers, and those that I edit, I will place below for comparison. More later!

And I hope we do it again soon!

Love this album. I was born and raised in Maine. Portland Head Light and Nubble are my favorite to photograph.

ABOUT PORTLAND OREGON AND THE MAINE CONNECTION (via Wikipedia) "Portland started as a spot known as "the clearing,"[12] which was on the banks of the Willamette about halfway between Oregon City and Fort Vancouver. In 1843, William Overton saw great commercial potential for this land but lacked the funds required to file a land claim. He struck a bargain with his partner Asa Lovejoy of Boston, Massachusetts: for 25¢, Overton would share his claim to the 640 acre (2.6 km²) site. Overton later sold his half of the claim to Francis W. Pettygrove of Portland, Maine. Pettygrove and Lovejoy each wished to name the new city after his respective home town; this was decided with a coin toss, which Pettygrove won in a series of two out of three tosses.[13] The coin used for this decision, now known as the Portland Penny, is on display in the headquarters of the Oregon Historical Society."

Portland, Oregon was founded by people from Portland, Maine. So we are Numero Uno :)

Hi Laura, Looks like you guys had a great time. You've captured and proven that there is a Portland, Maine. LOL ... explanation following ... Yesterday, a stranger was talking to a friend about Portland. It was very confusing to her. She questioned "Portland, Maine? He looked at her with disdain and stated Portland, Oregon, and was pretty sure there was no Portland, Maine. My what a small world he lived in!! Silly me wasn't 100% sure anymore myself when asked. And then within hours of my doubt, a wonderful "Travel Brochure” for Portland, Maine.

Wonderful gallery, Laura. It is interesting what new perspective you have in the things I look at all the time. It was a lot of fun, like having a new set of eyes. :)
