Here in Maine, much to the suprise of many people, Lupine's are not really "wildflowers" and are not native for that matter. The seeds must be purposely scattered. People in Maine love them and they do very well in wet soils especially, and so are often found flourishing along roadside ditches.
The National Park Service in Acadia once tried to eradicate them but had to stop (temporarily) due to public outrage (they then simply waited till the flowers stopped blooming and therefore people would not notice).
Because they appear as the direct result of people, and in that way are a domestic plant, I think of the field they bloom in as the free-spirited gardens of Maine.
