This lichen, Elegant Sunburst Lichen (Xanathoria elegans) can be found on rocks along Maine's rocky coast (and also along the shores of lakes large enough to have wave action, like the Great Lakes).

They are common on rocks fertilized(nitrogen) by birds (like gulls) and mammals.

While there are other xanathoria species, they rarely grow on rock -- as this one does.
