In Hawaii, there is a legend (with many versions) about the naupaka blossom. Two young people fall in love but are forbidden to wed. One is banished to the mountains and the other to the sea. Grief-stricken, they pine away and die. At their deaths, a new plant begins to grow in each location but the plants only have half-flowers. It is said that if you take the bloom from a mountain plant and pair it with the ocean flower, you will have a perfect whole.
