Baby burrowing owl in the opening to a manmade burrow at the local park.
To answer a comment question, there are several burrows that were built by volunteers in hopes that the owls would move in. Some owls were relocated here because they lived in construction areas. The owls were brought here, banded (remember C4? he's a male that was moved here) and kept calm, fed and cool by placing them here with netting all around making them a 'tent' temporary shelter. Once they had time to relax and think about it, the netting was removed. They were free to leave or stay and there have been babies born here every year for a few years now!
So, I knew there were babies here. :) That's the good news. The bad news is they really don't venture out at first until after sunset. These images were taken after dark, using a flash from 20 feet away (I'm not good at estimating but that's my guess comparing to my living room lol). I could barely tell there was a baby in the hole when I took this, I lightened the photo in photoshop.
