LOVE BUGS (Plecia nearctica)/Flower

Myakka River State Park - Sarasota, Florida

Seen above sipping nectar from a flower, Love Bugs were introduced from South America, and were first recorded in Texas in the 1940's. The female is larger than the male, and typically drags him around after her. After mating and laying 150-600 eggs, the female soon dies. Her lifespan is about 3 or 4 days.
