The long bill (about 8 inches) in toucan species is thought to be an ADAPTATION for reaching fruits at the end of fine branches that cannot support the weight of the bird. The diet of this South American rainforest bird consists of fruits, insects, nestlings and lizards. When courting, male and female toucans have been observed to toss fruits to each other, throwing and catching them with their bills.
