MALE RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER (Melanerpes carolinus)

Myakka River State Park, Sarasota, FL

Cavities in dead and live trees, such as cabbage palm, live oak, bald cypress, or slash pine, serve as nest sites for this species. Red-bellied Woodpeckers are aggressive birds, and may force other cavity-nesters from established nest sites.
