GALAPAGOS FLAMINGO (Phoenicopterus ruber) 1162

Galapagos Islands - Ecuador

When feeding, these shore birds move their bills upside down underwater to gather and sift the bottom sediment. Flamingos feed on crustaceans such as brine shrimp, as well as small water plants. The color of their plumage is determined by their diet. Their food (particularly the crustaceans) contain carotinoid pigments that cause their feathers to become pink.
