Canon EOS300D (Digital Rebel) Hack Instructions

Overview

When Canon came out with its "Digital Rebel" (300D) (link) in Aug 2003, almost immediately everyone noticed--and review sites confirmed--that its basic structure and image quality were identical to the next-model up, the EOS-10D (link), that in fact it was based on this model very largely. The image quality, autofocusing ability (except for "servo" on the 10D, missing from the "Rebel") were equal between the two (which they should be, if the 300D is in fact derived from the 10D)--and especially noteworthy is that many of the EOS-10D's features are still present in the Digital Rebel, sort-of; they've simply been electronically "switched-off" in the software ("firmware") that operates it.

A guy in Russia by the name (username?) of "Wasia" figured this out, and figured out a way around it by simply turning these features back "on." Then, another group of persons (or person, not sure) improved it more, this more current version goes by the name Undouchables, and that is the firmware this site points to now.

Simply enough--install this alternative firmware on the Digital Rebel (300D), and you reactivate many of the EOS-10D's features! If you are not sure if this is ethical and amounts to "cheating" (since perhaps part of what made the 300D affordable was the very act of disabling these features), to me the controversy no longer exists because both the 300D and 10D are now discontinued, so no "cheating" of Canon would occur now to do this, while arguably one could say you were "cheating" before to do this when the models were current. (When I bought mine, the 10D--though not the 300D--had already been discontinued, and I bought my 300D used anyway, and it already came with this firmware, the older "Wasia" version.)

Having used the current Undouchables and the original "Wasia," I can tell you--it's great! The main things about it I like:

  • Perhaps most of all, you acquire "flash exposure compensation." It's quickly accessed in the shooting mode using the JUMP button
  • Ability to shoot flash in Av (aperture-priority) mode without "slow-sync" flash activating (which would require a tripod to be used)
  • Ability to lock camera if no Compact Flash card is loaded. Imagine: as delivered, the DR will shoot all day long without a card. Imagine doing that and going home to find out nothing you did was saved!
  • Mirror lock-up (and you can specify how long before it activates)
  • Can specify the size of the embedded JPEG if you shoot in RAW (otherwise, it's a "Medium-FINE" JPEG; I prefer a "Large-FINE" JPEG)
  • One-Shot (OS) and AI autofocus selectable (still not servo, though) using right-browse button. Useful for selecting "OS" if camera "hunts" in "AI"
  • Can "force fire" camera by shifting it "on-the-fly" to manual-focus w/release priority (vs focus priority)

The only caution: the official word is that if you install this & send your camera to Canon for servicing, they won't honor the warranty. Just be warned. (Note: the firmware CAN be removed later on.)

    Features

Flash-exposure-compensation is re-enabled via this "hack." To set it, simply hold down the JUMP button; you will see the exposure compensation scale pop on the LCD, and the words "FEC 1" appear. Simply spin the wheel and watch the scale change to reflect your setting. Don't forget to turn it back to 0 when you're done. Unfortunately, it appears that nothing shows up on the LCD or viewfinder to remind you that you've set FEC to somehting other than 0. Obviously if you forget to turn it back to 0 subsequent shots will be underexposed--AND, turning the camera off & back on does NOT clear the setting, it "remembers" it.

"Force-Fire" Button. The left-browse button, when pressed down, turns the AF off--and makes the camera release-priority. (This does NOT mean you can leave the lens's AF/MF button on AF and turn the focusing ring without damaging the camera, unless that particular lens has this feature.) This is a good way to "force-fire" the camera--that is, make it take the photo immediately without introducing a delay due to its insistence on re-autofocusing again unnecessarily.

Mirror lockup (covered in custom functions CFs, below) is enabled. Obstensively it is switched off/on in the custom functions menus, but you can actually leave it on and use the "drive" button to toggle it off & on. With the drive in "single" shooting mode, mirror lockup would be activated (if so set in the menus, of course); in continuous, no matter, mirror lockup is not activated. So you can put the drive in "single" to use mirror lockup, "continuous" to not use it--and leave it turned on in the custom functions menu.

The "hack" re-enables most of the EOS10D's custom functions. A list of them follows. Not all the ones listed actually work as of the most current version (detailed below).

To access the Custom Functions menu:
  • Press MENU
  • Go to the 4th page (the one with "--2" in the heading), scroll down to Custom Functions (C. Fn)
  • Press SET.
  • Use the <<< and >>> keys to select the function to access, then press SET to access
  • Use the UP/DOWN keys to scroll through the choices, then SET to accept the settings.
  • Tap on the shutter release lightly to leave the menus altogether

    List of Custom Functions

Not all the listed custom functions actually work; those that do work are bold-face, and their defaults are bold-faced too. With those that work, the check mark shows my preferences.

    OptionValues/Actions
CF1 (SET Button Function when shooting) 0 Default (no function)
1 Change quality (type of JPEG, or RAW mode)
2 Change parameters (level of contrast, sharpening, etc)

    CF4 (Shutter Button/AE Lock Button) 0 AF/AE lock
    1 AE Lock/AF
2 AF/AF lock, no AE lock
    3 AE/AF, no lock
    CF5 (AF Assist Beam/Flash Firing) 0 Emits/Fires
    1 Does not emit/Fires
    2 Only ext. flash emits/Fires
    3 Emits/does not fire

    1 1/3 stop
    CF7 (AF Point Registration) 0 [.]
    1 [ _ ]
    2 [ - ]
    3 [ -]
    4 [--.--]
    5 [- ]
    6 [ - ]
    7 [ - ]
    CF8 (RAW+JPEG record) 0 RAW+Small Normal
    1 RAW+Small Fine
    2 RAW+Medium Normal
    3 RAW+Medium Fine
    4 RAW+Large Normal
    5 RAW+Large Fine
    CF9 (Bracket, Sequence/Auto Cancel) 0 0,-,+/enable
    1 0,-,+/disable

    1 3 sec
    2 4.5 sec
    3 6 sec
    4 7.5 sec
    5 10 sec

My preferences? I like to set:

  • CF1 (SET button function in "shooting" mode) to "quality" so I don't have to access the menus to switch from Large-Fine JPEG (which I use most-often) to RAW.
  • CF2 (Shutter Release possible w/out CF Card) to "not possible" so that I don't accidentally shoot pictures all day without a card (and thus no photos!)
  • CF3 (Flash-Sync Speed in Av-mode) to "1/200 second" because I almost always use aperture-priority (Av) when shooting flash & don't want "slow-sync" engaged (which brings out the ambient light better but typically requires a tripod); I'd rather lock the shutter at 1/200 second
  • CF8 (RAW+JPEG Record) to "Small-Fine" JPEG to have the embedded JPEG be as small as possible yet still be a good "preview" of what I took, I'll "develop" the RAW if I want a full-sized image to edit, blow-up etc
  • CF 12 (Mirror Lockup), I like to leave to "Enabled" all the time; I can then "toggle" off/on using the "drive" button; in "single" mode, the mirror lockup will activate, in "continuous" mode it disables the mirror lockup even if enabled--this is a quick way to "toggle" mirror lockup without needing to use the menus

    Installing the Hacked Software

First, some things to watch out for (from sites I've read, not my experience):

  • Camera may lock up if you attempt to change the language, may be possible to change the language but must be done on the original Canon 300D 1.1.1 firmware
  • Some features may not work correctly if you are using another language - use English as a workaround
  • If you upgrade (from a previous hack, not "original" Canon firmware) and some of the things don't seem to work properly, set the settings in the Custom Function back to the original values (see below) and install the original 1.1.1 firmware, then upgrade to the new firmware
  • Change the SET button to something other than FEC before upgrading to this version (if upgrading from an older "hack" software)
  • If MLU does not work, ensure that the camera is in single drive mode
  • When using a flash with the MLU enabled, the flash will fire when the mirror lifts and again with the shutter opens
  • Menu items for the MLU timeout will show a few arrows – ignore the arrows
  • The quick erase may have altered something with the code used for monitoring the battery, and the low battery icon may appear earlier than expected
  • Numbering of the custom functions are incorrect but the functions themselves are correct

Those cautions aside, here's how to upgrade the camera to the "hacked" software

    Step 1: Download the Software

Click on the link for downloading the file.

Download File (My Angelfire Site, will open in new window)

Save this file to a location on your computer's hard drive. Then, go to this location and "unzip" the files. Look for a file named E3kr111.FIR . This is the file you will need.

Step 2: Prepare Compact Flash Card Used for Uploading Firmware

Take a spare Compact Flash card (even an 8 megabyte is good enough), the camera, switch camera off, insert CF card into your Canon Digital Rebel, then switch on the camera. Then, format this Compact Flash card. Turn off the camera, remove the card.

Step 3: Load Firmware File onto the Card

Place this Compact Flash card into your computer's card reader. Access this card--it should show up as a spare hard-drive letter on your computer, probably letter E or H, etc. (This drive letter may automatically pop-up when you insert the card.) Then, locate the E3kr111.FIR file you downloaded, and COPY this file to your Compact Flash card in the "root" directory.

Step 4: Upload Firmware File to Camera

Make sure your camera's battery is charged aplenty. Remove the card from the computer's card reader. Place it in your camera. Turn on your camera. A box should pop-up like this:

Press SET to activate OKAY. You may have to do this a time or two (the box, top-right, may appear). You will then get a box showing the firmware as it's downloading, like this:

This will be on the LCD for 3-4 minutes or so, so make sure your battery is pretty fresh to give this enough time to work.

After the firmware has updated, this box will appear:

The update has finished. Re-format this card (it may be wise to reformat ALL cards--just make sure no images are on there 1st of course).

    Accessing the Custom-Functions Menu

Press the MENU button on the camera, then go the 4th page on the menus (the tab with "--2" in the heading). On the bottom, look for Custom Functions (C. Fn). Use the <<< and >>> keys to select the function, then press SET to access it then the UP/DOWN keys to scroll through the choices, then SET to accept the settings.

    List of Custom Functions

    Returning Camera to "Un-Hacked" State

Should you feel the need to reset the camera back to its unhacked state, simply do this:

  • Reset all the Custom Function values to the original 300D settings (the "green" settings). Note, you cannot use the Reset option in the menu, it does not affect these values. Once done, the bottom-row of digits on the CF screen should have these (binary) values:

    0,0,0,0,0,1,0,11,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0
  • Return flash exposure compensation (JUMP button) to 0
  • Make sure AF-mode (right-browse button) reads AI
  • Download Canon's firmware (link) and install it to the camera

    Resource Links

I've linked to the various websites I have found which talk about this and provide detailed instructions, in case you want them for reference (or prefer them to mine):

Main Reference Link About the Waisware Hack
    http://www.bahneman.com/liem/photos/tricks/digital-rebel-tricks.html

The one I see passed around & linked to in Internet forums all the time. It's very useful, and since it's the one I see linked to the most, I'd imagine it's the one most kept up-to-date etc. The most fail-safe link. However the file is provided in RAR format, which means you have to download & install another program (WinRar) just for this purpose unless you already have it. Why not in ZIP format which everyone uses? Hence...

"ZIP" File Link for the Waisware Version (previous version, no longer used):
    http://chrispix.servepics.com/firmware.htm and http://eos-digital-rebel.hp.infoseek.co.jp/firmware/E3kr111B71.zip
    http://web.mit.edu/cjoye/www/photo/   http://eos-digital-rebel.hp.infoseek.co.jp/firmware/E3kr111B71.zip

These are for the "Wasia" hack, which is not what I use any longer; the "Undouchables" hack is what I use now. As long as you have a program for handling ZIP files (Winzip is the most common [link] ) you're good to go.
