Butterfly caterpillar (Limenitis) sp.

Larose Forest

This is the caterpillar of either the Viceroy butterfly or the White Admiral butterfly, the larvae of both look nearly identical. As can be seen, they too mimic bird droppings in an effort to avoid being eaten.

Interesting, similar caterpillars for different-looking butterflies. We have a case of the reverse, two hairstreaks that can't be told apart as adults but the caterpillars, and their attendant ants, are quite different. (One is 'ictinus', the other 'pseudictinus'.)
