Pigeon horntail, female (Tremex columba)

Beechwood Cemetery

THese large wasps lay their eggs into decaying wood, here an old, dead maple. The long projection under the abdomen is NOT a stinger, it is an ovipositor by which the female lays her eggs. These wasps DO NOT STING.

Amazing detail. Good to hear that not all wasps are war-mongers. ;)

Great closeup, and a relief to hear that they don't sting. V.
