This is a member of the giant silk moth family (Saturnidae). As the name suggests, it is usually found in pine trees. This one was crossing the forest road, undoubtedly looking for a place to pupate. Many of the silkmoth caterpillars will travel some distance to do this and at this time of year you may encounter them crossing roads and open areas.
