Barred Owl

Rockcliffe Park

This poor owl must have been very frazzled the other day. It was chased from tree to tree to tree by a raven who was extremely upset with it. Sometimes crows would join in the chase, but mainly it was the raven who was literally in the face of the owl, sometimes coming within inches of it. The owl finally settled in this pine tree. Some hours later I went back with my camera and found it in the same tree, probably thankful for the silence! When flying, this owl looks quite big, but when next to a raven it looks smaller, though both are relatively the same size.

Any decent owl shot should fill with you pride. I am more likely to hear them at night rather than see them during daylight, let alone they being photographable!

One just can't get a decent day's sleep!

Great shot, perhaps the ravens are nesting nearby? I have pair that raise quite a ruckus in the trees when I pass through.

Great find, encounter and image Christine. I had the same experience once with a young Great Horned Owl. It was chased to exhaustion by a large flock of Crows. Had it not been for a nearby contractor, it likely would have succumbed to the attacks. When I got to the site, the contractor had placed it in a box, in the back of his truck, then took it to his farm in Almond where he released it.

A fine shot of this owl we hear them almost every day and see them often. Ny favorite!

at last respite from that encounter....crows and ravens can be so aggressive towards other birds, even harassing eagles..

It looks a bit sleepy now. I hope it gets some rest.
