Smooth green snake (Opheodrys vernalis)

Marlborough Forest

A truly beautiful and harmless snake, but not often seen. There has been speculation that its numbers are declining, but it is so difficult to find that assessing numbers is not easy. I have found them only when they cross the trail in front of me, or on occasion are found under a log or rock.

From the expression he/she does indeed look harmless. So sad that many folk kill any snake on the grounds that it might be dangerous...

Beautiful healthy looking snake. I used to find these smooth green snakes a lot when I was a kid, but have only seen a few in the last decade. I've heard their numbers are declining down here too.
